Famous Russian defense analyst Igor Korotchenko emphasized that Azerbaijan could purchase Su-35 fighter jets from Russia. Experts commented on the possibility of Azerbaijan’s purchase.

How Close is the Deal?

No official agreement has been announced yet, but given past military cooperation between Baku and Moscow, it seems likely. The visit by Azerbaijani Air Force personnel to Russian military-industrial enterprises in 2020, where they reportedly inspected Su-35 and MiG-35 aircraft, may have laid the groundwork for this potential agreement. Furthermore, Russian officials have stated that they could produce fighter jets tailored to Azerbaijan’s needs.

Why the Su-35?

We should not forget the Soviet past of the Azerbaijani Air Force. Their historical traditions and military habits from the Soviet past lead them to Russian aircraft. The supply status of the current fleet and costs are another factor. The Su-35 is a highly advanced multi-role fighter jet known for its air superiority and ground attack capabilities. For Azerbaijan, acquiring two squadrons of these formidable machines would be a powerful game changer against external threats, especially Iran. We should also take into account the recent tensions with Armenia. Baku, which is part of the Caucasus and Middle East politics, can continue its strategic moves in a region where security dynamics are constantly changing.

Air Defense Systems are Key Too

Korotchenko is not just talking about the Su-35. He also underlines the potential to strengthen Azerbaijan’s air defense network with cutting-edge systems such as the long-range S-400, medium- and short-range Buk-M3 and Tor-M2.

If Azerbaijan can acquire Su-35 fighter jets and modern air defense systems, the country’s air defense umbrella will take on a completely different appearance. This is not only about strengthening Azerbaijan’s security; it could also have positive consequences for regional stability. A strong Azerbaijan would be a force multiplier against aggressive countries with imperial ambitions in the region, such as Iran. However, the timeline and details of this potential deal are not yet clear. We will be following developments closely – it is definitely a story worth following!
